The story is set in modern-day New York, detailing the passionate beginnings of an intense relationship between Detective Nick Carter, a thoroughly alpha male cop with a distrust of all things paranormal, including his own psychic abilities, and Ruby, a beautiful yet lonely vampiress with psychic powers of her own. When they meet the initial attraction is sizzling, and when they realise that their combination of powers are perfectly matched they seem to be ideal for each other. Apart from the fact that Ruby is the prime suspect in Nick’s latest murder investigation. After the couple come together in a series of passionate encounters over the course of the twenty four hours surrounding the murder investigation, Nick must battle his distrust and fears of intimacy and Ruby confront some very real monsters from the past, if they are to stand a chance of being together.
